in iraq as a member of the u.s. marine corps. succeeding joe barton. earlier in his career he was on the city council of arlington, texas. new congress, new leaders. watch it all on c-span. house republicans were briefed about security on the southern border by homeland security secretary kirstjen nielsen and vice president mike pence. here are gop leaders. >> hi, everybody. we just had a good meeting with the vice president, secretary of homeland security. the main focus is we have a crisis at the southern border. no one denies we have a crisis at the southern border. it is a humanitarian and
security crisis and we need to provide the necessary resources. the president continues to negotiate in good faith. he is giving an address this evening to show you the importance of the issue. at the same time, we are in a situation where even though we have provided information the democrats asked for in terms of detailing the necessary resources to use, they have not responded. they refused to negotiate. we are dedicated to making sure we secure the border and stop the partisan games. the vice president was received very warmly and was able to give everyone a clear idea of where the president stands. with that, i will turn it over to the whip. >> we have a clear crisis at the southern border. i appreciate the fact that president trump has a strong solve this crisis
while working to the government --t we have seen from policy pelosi and schumer is a refusal to reopen the government. that built went over to the senate. the president immediately started to offer a negotiation with chuck schumer. they started talking numbers through the vice presidency in one day did you see a counter offer. vice president pence did a great job addressing a conference to explain how serious this crisis is. the numbers are alarming. sure president trump will go into some of that tonight. just last year over 17,000 people with prior criminal convictions tried to cross the southern border and were caught. those were just the ones we can't by the way -- we caught, by the way. that is what this is about.
we want to get the entire government reopened while securing the border. you can't have one without the other. you can't say you are for border security and refused to support the very things it will take. these are numbers from the experts tasked with keeping our country safe, but don't have the tools they need. we will see tonight how serious the crisis is at the border. we have to reopen the government while securing the border. that is what this crisis is about. >> we got an update from our conference. productive conference. more importantly, this president from the date of the partial shutdown was to begin was trying to negotiate to an agreement that could keep government open, but more importantly solve our border problem. when we met last wednesday, we
couldn't get to a point, because we did not have leadership races done. you saw how close some of these races were. we waited to come back friday. we made some improvements. we stayed over the weekend. this is the time to solve this problem before we get to the point where federal employees do not get paid. the president is committed to solve that problem while keeping the border secure. in those meetings at the white house, every person said they are for border security. you want to ask the definition of border security. when i watch the floor, it seems like it is more game.s those bills are going nowhere in the senate. the president has said he would veto it. now it is time for both sides to come together, come to an agreement, and find common ground to make sure the rest of government opens and we move
forward and end the crisis on our border. the president will speak tonight. i look forward to hearing what he has to say. i hope the american people listens and finds the president wants to solve this problem. >> did they give any indication the president was going to order ? national emergency >> they did not touch on that topic. >> under president obama, your side was concerned saying we need to exercise article one authority. would you be ok if the president went around congress? >> i have watched this president with democrats on the other side. i have watched the speaker of the house first interrupt the secretary, wouldn't let her give her own presentation. then as we continue these meetings days later when the secretary finally has the
ability to give facts out, she says i disagree with the facts. they are the facts happening along the border. we have individuals who say they don't want to talk about anything even though they say they believe in border security. this is the time to put people before politics, stop playing political games. this president has worked day-in and day-out trying to make sure people came together, find common ground. this is something the president ran on. we have a crisis on our border. we have to solve that problem and make sure government opens up. i apologize. >> is it possible to secure the border without a wall? >> when user core -- you secure the border, it is not just a wall, but a wall matters.
